Sports News I Missed
|
On Twitter: @longisland495A rundown on the sports stories that happened while I was away for 3 months. A hella active 3 months. Tigers' pitcher Armando Galarraga got screwed out of a perfect game because of a controversial call at 1st base with 2 outs in the 9th. Jim Joyce of course was the umpire and he saw the replay. He immediately knew that a young kid was just robbed out of what could've been the greatest night of his young life and young career. The following day, Galarraga handed the Tigers' lineup card to Joyce at home plate. Given the circumstances, the moment was heartfelt and Joyce owned up. The A's Dallas Braden and the Phillies' Roy Halladay have already thrown perfectos this year. Halladay went 27 for 27 in Florida and the Marlins tried to profit from it even though attendance was low...as it always is for Marlins games. Braden had his with his grandmother in the stands at Oakland on Mother's Day. Good for you, Dallas!Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The US did make it to the Knockout Stage but got ousted 2-1 with Extra Time by Ghana. The US could've gone farther but the officiating was atrocious to say the least! From the Koman Coulibaly call to England getting robbed of a goal...THIS is a sport that needs instant replay almost as bad as MLB does. The only difference is that FIFA will probably have replay in time for the Brazil World Cup in 2014 before the 2014 MLB season. Speaking of World Cups, the US could host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022. 2022 sounds more realistic I think 2018 is going to England despite Wembley Stadium's issues. The LA Lakers won their 2nd straight NBA Championship by beating the Boston Celtics 4 games to 3. Kobe Bryant won his 2nd MVP even though you could make a case for Pau Gasol for MVP. Kobe didn't have a Kobe-type game in Game 7 despite the 15 boards. In other words, Pau was Kobe and Kobe was Pau. If Kendrick Perkins was healthy for that Game 7, the C's are probably raising an 18th banner atop TD Banknorth Garden. Phil Jackson's coming back for a shot at a 4th 3-Peat.John Wall was the coveted name going into this past NBA Draft and he got picked first by the Washington Wizards. Wall hopefully will be the anti-Gilbert Arenas and bring positive attention to a Wizards that went though a lot of BS with Arenas and his "hobby". Other rookies drafted included Evan Turner to the Sixers, and Demarcus Cousins to Sacramento. Brett Favre is doing what Brett Favre always does...tease us about retirement, skip most of training camp, throw balls to a few high schoolers in Mississippi, and fly to Minnesota on a private jet with a local Minneapolis TV station covering the whole thing. What else is new?The MLB trade deadline was headlined by Cliff Lee going to the Texas Rangers as well as Roy Oswalt being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phils have been hot recently. Lee needs run support. Lee can't throw no-hitters all the time. The most recent sports story that's making headlines is the official divorce of Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren. Elin also recently did an interview with People Magazine giving her own view on the saga that was Tiger Woods. She said she didn't know about Tiger's affairs and didn't get into a fight with him after the car crash. But it may not be the biggest. It was of course, NBA Free Agency 2010. Boozer to the Bulls, Nowitzki and Pierce stayed with their respective teams. Fisher remained a Laker. Jordan Farmar went to New Jersey. Amare Stoudemire wants to make it in New York. Joe Johnson stayed with the Hawks. The three biggest prizes were LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. There were rumors about the 3 holding a free agent summit in Miami. LBJ narrowed his wish list down to 6 teams (Knicks, Nets, Cavs, Bulls, Heat, Clippers). Bosh announced his decision to join Wade in Miami. And on "The Decision"...LeBron took his talents to South Beach. Needless to say, he's become Art Modell in a headband and hightops in C-Town. Cleveland TV stations showed fans burning his jersey and wanting his "Witness" banner taken down from Downtown Cleveland. Of course it was. Plus, Cavs owner Dan Gilbert stole the spotlight with his scathing letter posted on the Cavs' website. He called LeBron a "Self-Declared Former King" and said the Cavs will win a title before King James and Co. Gilbert was echoing the sentiments of Cleveland even if it means he won't be able to build casinos...in Michigan. So those are some of the major stories that I missed while I was away. If there's anything else to bring up or something else I missed, feel free to let me know!Once again, couldn't be happier to be back with you guys and girls!
